“Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.” Galatians 5:25-26
Comparisons? Competition? Does anyone other than me struggle with these feelings? I’m not as discerning as Kim or as good of listener as Brenda or as eloquent as Elizabeth or as encouraging as Peggy. I’m just not… them!
Actually, that is a good thing. I am, you are, God’s own handiwork, recreated in Christ Jesus, to do the good works which He planned beforehand for you and for me (Ephesians 2:10). These tailored-made plans will fit under God’s great plans of loving Him, loving others, and making disciples, but will look different for each of us.
One memorable trekking moment was when God showed me how the trail experience mirrored my walk with Him. At one point I became discouraged as my teammates trekked the rugged terrain with little effort. While I really wanted to keep up with them, I just couldn’t. One Sherpa noticed and started to lead me on a path that I could manage. It worked when I followed him exactly—putting my feet where he put his, keeping the same pace as his and not comparing myself to the other trekkers. I arrived, safely and joyfully.
We are uniquely led by the Spirit and uniquely equipped by God for His good works. We are ordinary people called to extraordinary work for His kingdom. No comparisons. No competitions. Only you can fulfill His unique plan for you. So how has God uniquely wired you? Author Carol Kent has said, “Often the most fulfilling work we could have is the most obvious opportunity in our path today.” Let’s keep in step with the Spirit, the Master Sherpa, without provocation, conceit or envy.
